1.) Why updated so often?
Each MS operating system has its own bugs and differences, be it Home, Pro, Server, etc. Also, there are too many changes in MS Win 10 and too fast, comprehensive auto-updates. This is different from MS Windows 10 support which is only valid for 1-2 years depending on the build version.
Back to Q-Dir: I'm updating it to address new Windows 10 features and bugs in the major Windows 10 auto-update.
Some changes cause errors on 98/XP/Server 2005, while others cause problems on XP/7, which in turn may affect Win-10... and so on.
Maybe/probably/certainly I will split the Q-Dir program into different file explorers for different operating systems and user needs!
Maybe/probably/surely I'll divide the Q-Dir program into different file explorers for different operating systems and user needs!
Please always use the latest version of ... The Windows File Manager Q-Dir !

2.) What advantages and disadvantages do I have with regular updates?
Regular updates offer various advantages and disadvantages:Advantages:
1. Security:
Regular updates can close security holes and reduce the risk of malware and hacker attacks.
2. Stability:
Updates can fix bugs and performance issues that may affect the stability of the system.
3. New features:
Updates may introduce new features, improvements and optimizations that improve the user experience.
4. Compatibility:
Updates can improve compatibility with other software applications and devices, resulting in smoother integration.
5. Support:
Through regular updates, manufacturers show that they are actively supporting and improving their products, which can increase user trust.
Disadvantages:
1. Time and Effort:
Downloading and installing updates takes time and can disrupt normal operations. This can be particularly annoying when updates are installed automatically and occur at inconvenient times.
2. Incompatibility:
In some cases, updates may cause incompatibility issues with existing software or hardware, which may result in malfunctions or crashes.
3. Resource Consumption:
Some updates may require additional resources such as disk space, bandwidth and processing power, especially if they are large or contain large files.
4. Incorrect updates:
Occasionally, updates themselves can contain errors that can lead to new problems. This may require further patches or rollbacks to resolve the issues.
5. Loss of customizations:
With some updates, individual settings or customizations may be lost, which may cause inconvenience, especially if users have spent time customizing their system according to their needs.
Overall, the benefits of regular updates often outweigh the disadvantages as they help improve the security, stability, and functionality of software and operating systems. However, it is important that updates are carefully managed and monitored to minimize potential problems.
3.) Do I have to take part in every regular update or can I skip a few?
It is recommended to perform regular updates to ensure the security, stability and performance of your system. However, there are situations where it is possible to skip or delay some updates. Here are some factors to consider:
1. Critical security updates:
Security updates should usually be installed immediately as they can close security holes and protect your system from malware and hacker attacks.
2. Feature updates:
These updates often bring new features and improvements that may be desirable but not necessarily required immediately. You may want to delay these updates slightly to ensure they don't cause unexpected problems.
3. Optional Updates:
Sometimes optional updates are released that are not necessarily critical. You can install or skip these updates depending on your needs and interests.
4. Compatibility:
If you know that a particular update might cause compatibility issues with your hardware or software, it may make sense to temporarily skip the update until those issues are resolved.
5. Stability:
If an update is known to cause problems or affect your system stability, it may be wise to temporarily avoid the update and wait for an improved version.
However, it is important to note that skipping updates can introduce potential security risks and may make your system more vulnerable to attacks. It is therefore advisable to monitor updates regularly and make an informed decision about which updates to install. If you are unsure, it is best to consult the recommendations of your IT team or technical support.
- Thank you for your rapid and complete response. With all the Operating Systems and their updates, now I understand why you have to update so often. Maybe it would be worthwhile to drop the updating on Windows 98 & XP since I understand these are discontinued operating systems. Also the same can be said for some versions post XP.?
